False powder scare

Nine office workers at 26 Federal Plaza were decontaminated Wednesday afternoon after being exposed to white powder that arrived in an envelope, according to police.
By Wednesday evening it appeared that the powder was not dangerous, and 26 Federal Plaza was not evacuated. The workers, from the Social Security office on the building’s 40th floor, had to discard their clothing and take showers. The New York Times reported that only one of the office workers touched the envelope containing the powder, but the other workers who were nearby were considered potentially contaminated as well.
