Up to 140 firefighters, or 33 units, fought a three-alarm blaze last Sunday night at 155 Essex St., just off Stanton St., on the Lower East Side. The fire in the five-story brick residential building started at 10:06 p.m. in a tile and flooring store, Kahan House Furnishings, on the ground floor, according to F.D.N.Y. spokesperson Mike Loughran. Firefighters brought the fire under control at 11:57 p.m. Six firefighters and one civilian sustained minor injuries and were brought to the New York Weill Cornell Medical Center and St. Vincent’s Hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Loughran said. Tenants have vacated the building, which has about 16 apartments. According to Essex St. resident and local photographer Clayton Patterson, in 1987, there was a fire at the corner of Stanton and Ludlow Sts., where Kahan’s store used to be, and the building had to be torn down.
