The Lower East Side Gauchos 14-and-under baseball team had its biggest weekend of the year. Facing as tough a schedule as could be played in the metropolitan area, they went 4-0 and moved into first place in the Parade Ground Summer League. Friday night, the Gauchos met the world champion 13-and-under Youth Service team and routed them, 14-8. The highlight of the game was a 300-foot-plus homerun by Matt Sakfo (Xavier High School). Saturday, the Gauchos played the Bonnie Paws, who finished second in the Parade Ground Spring League. Nelson Jimenez (LaSalle H.S.) pitched another excellent complete game as the Gauchos won a tight contest, 3-2.

On Sunday, the Gauchos had a double-header against the Youth Service 14-and-under team, the Parade Ground Spring League champions. In the first game, Jimenez doubled in two runs in the last inning to give the Gauchos a 7-6 win. The game featured excellent pitching from Jesus Velazquez (St. Raymond’s H.S.)and Erik Torres (Cardinal Hayes H.S.). Service had a runner on second with two outs when Juan Dominguez (Xaverian H.S.) made an outstanding defensive play at second to end the game. In the nightcap, the Gauchos scored 3 in the first with Joe Tellez (St. Raymond’s H.S.) getting a big hit and held on to win, 5-3, with Jimenez coming in to close out the game and get the save.
