Having fun at Abingdon, ca. 1962

With the recent start of the reconstruction of Abingdon Sq. Park, former City Councilmember Carol Greitzer, apparently feeling a bit nostalgic, was inspired to send The Villager the above photo. “With Abingdon Sq. Park torn up, I thought we could look at the old park — circa early ’60s,” Greitzer, standing at left, wrote in a note attached to the photo. “[Legendary urban planner] Jane Jacobs and I are having a discussion, while in the foreground, Elizabeth Greitzer pushes her Raggedy Ann doll in now-defunct swings!” According to Aubrey Lees, Community Board 2’s Parks Committee chairperson, the renovation will take nine months to complete.
