James Henry Twine, an East Village artist and treasurer of the co-op where he lived on E. Ninth St. east of Avenue B, died Jan. 2 at the age of 80.
Known as Henry, he was native of Boynton, Okla., the son of Effie Rhyne and Matthew Twine. He studied at the Art Institute in Oklahoma City.
Henry Twine came to New York more than 40 years ago and lived first on E. 10th St., a street of art galleries in the 1960s, according to his son James Robert Twine. He studied painting at the Arts Students League and frequented the Salmagundi Club on Fifth Ave. in the late 1960s.
He designed book covers and was a street portraitist, working in the Times Square area and on Sixth Ave. at W. Fourth St.
His marriage to Chlake Szuch, a fellow art student and designer, ended in the 1970s.
Twine’s funeral was at Trinity Lutheran Parish on E. Ninth St. on Jan. 5 and burial was in Manchester, N.H., where his son lives. Peter Jarema Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
