It’s hats off to G.V.L.L. on opening day at Pier 40
Above, flanked by Scooter the Holy Cow, the minor league Staten Island Yankees mascot, left, and Mr. Met, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn addressed the crowd at the Greenwich Village Little League’s annual opening day ceremonies on Pier 40 at W. Houston St. on Saturday; standing behind them is Rich Caccappolo, the league’s president. Below, baseball caps went flying as the Little Leaguers tossed them high into the air to officially kick off the start of the season. Also attending G.V.L.L.’s opening day were Congressmember Anthony Weiner, Assemblymember Deborah Glick, Borough President Scott Stringer, Community Board 2 Chairperson Brad Hoylman, P3 President Tobi Bergman, Hudson River Park Trust board member Paul Ullman and John Bennett, founder of G.V.L.L., which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this season. State Senators Tom Duane and Daniel Squadron wanted to attend, but unfortunately were “stuck in Albany.”
