Aaron Eng-Achson’s second grade English as a Second Language class from P.S. 42 on Hester St. recently created miniature models of official and unofficial landmarks in Chinatown for their social studies curriculum.
Class 2-311 researched, conducted walking tours and interviews on the Mooney House, the Manhattan Bridge plaza, the Lieutenant B.R. Kimlau Memorial, the Lin Xe Zu statue, the Confucius statue and Confucius Plaza. The Center for Architecture Foundation’s Adopt-A-School Program, a nonprofit organization, secured a grant from The I Grace Company to fund this project.
The class’s miniature models will be on display at the Center for Architecture Foundation, at 536 LaGuardia Pl., from June 28 through Aug. 10. For more information, call 212-358-6133.
A second grant from Verizon was secured for Eng-Achson’s class by City Lore. With the grant’s help, Class 2-311 created a mural with muralist Shelly Schicoff, a Hunter College professor, entitled “Neighborhood Scrapbook,” depicting unofficial landmarks in Chinatown. The mural was installed in P.S. 42’s yard.
