Class size matters

To The Editor:

Your editorial (June 16 – 22, “More schools needed to meet Downtown residential growth”) addresses a crucial problem: A lack of public school space in Lower Manhattan. Research proves that smaller classes result in higher student achievement.

The benefits of smaller class size are numerous and well documented. Without more school construction, however, class size will continue to grow. If our elected officials truly valued public education, they would build more schools and reduce class size in all grades, from kindergarten through 12th grade.
