Police in Lower Manhattan are investigating the death of a man with stab wounds found in a hotel basement on Sunday morning.

According to police sources, the 49-year-old man — whose identity has being withheld by the NYPD, pending family notification — was discovered by staff in the basement bathroom of the Public Hotel, located near the corner of Chrystie and Stanton Streets, at around 11:13 a.m. on April 21.

Officers from the 5th Precinct rushed to the scene and found that he had multiple stab wounds to the neck. A knife was also located and recovered near him. EMS officially pronounced him dead at the scene.

While the Chief Medical Examiner will officially determine the cause of death, sources familiar with the investigation report that detectives are currently looking into whether the man’s wounds were self-inflicted.
