A man was fatally struck by a subway train in the Bronx early Tuesday morning, police said.
Officers from the 48th Precinct and the NYPD Transit Bureau responded to a 911 call of a person in need of help at the Tremont Avenue station of the B and D line, located at East Tremont Avenue and Grand Concourse, at around 8:39 a.m. on Dec. 10.
Law enforcement sources said the victim, described as a Black man of an unknown age, was on the roadbed of the tracks as the northbound D train was entering the station.
Authorities said the train operator used the emergency brakes but was unable to stop the train, which struck the man. According to Citizen app, power on the northbound track was shut off at around 8:57 a.m.
EMS responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday morning. The NYPD is withholding the man’s name and identity pending family notification.
It is unclear at this time how the man got onto the tracks, but police do not suspect criminal activity. Officials from the MTA, the state agency that runs the city’s subway trains, told amNewYork Metro that the B and D trains were delayed in both directions as of 11 a.m.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
