Arizona Senator John McCain, left, was on Sixth Ave. near Soho on Monday at the 32BJ Service Employees International Union headquarters on a swing through New York seeking support for legislation he has sponsored to allow illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. A Republican, McCain is co-sponsoring the legislation with Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy. Under the bill, illegal immigrants could gain citizenship if they pay fines, pass background checks, learn English and work for a number of years. Congressmembers Jerrold Nadler and Charles Rangel, two Democrats from New York City, also attended the McCain event.
