A community memorial event will be held in Harry Wieder’s honor at Cooper Union Great Hall, 7 East 7th Street in Manhattan, on Sunday, June 20 at 6pm. It’s being organized
by a group of Harry’s friends, and there will be a program including invited speakers, live performances and an open mic for reflections from the audience.
Wieder, a member of Community Board 3 and an activist in groups advocating for gay rights and the disabled, was killed on April 27 when he was hit by a taxi while crossing the street as he was leaving the community board’s monthly meeting.
Sunday’s event will be followed by a reception at which refreshments will be served. Those who require a sign language interpreter or other accommodation should email their requests to HarrysMemorial@aol.com — and cc: joyceravitz@yahoo.com — by Friday, June 11. Those who wish to share photos of Harry for inclusion in a slideshow can send them to the same emails.
