A Department of Sanitation worker, an Italian food business, Village Community School’s new wing, the Washington Sq. Arch restoration and The Villager were among the winners of the 14th annual Village Awards by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation honoring the people, places and institutions that make the Village and the East Village special neighborhoods.

St. Mark’s Historic Landmarks Fund, the organization responsible for maintaining St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery on E. 10th St. and Second Ave., the historic churchyard and the rectory behind the church, was also a Village Award winner.

A group of theaters, music venues and a poetry club on the Bowery collectively won Village Awards, including Bowery Ballroom, Bowery Poetry Club, CBGB, Amato Theater and the Bouwerie Lane Theatre.

The June 15 celebration was held at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Pl.

In presenting the award to The Villager, G.V.S.H.P. said the Village’s community weekly newspaper is a must-read, regularly covering important stories not found in the city’s daily newspapers, doing so in a professional and entertaining manner.
