Last Wednesday evening, over a dozen people sat in the World Financial Center Winter Garden knitting pieces that would be ultimately be combined into a 100-foot-long scarf, its rows representing the 40,000 workers at the WFC. The “Knit-In” was one of three organized by arts World Financial Center that culminated in Saturday’s “The Big Draw Bus Lines,” conceived by artist Sheila Pepe (below), in which people were encouraged to connect two busses parked on the World Financial Center Plaza using everything from yarn to shoelaces, and the scarf created during the Knit-Ins. The crafty event was the newest edition to Saturday’s “The Big Draw,” the all-day drawing extravaganza inspired by the UK arts program by the same name, and presented for the first time last year by the Drawing Center and the River2River Festival. An all ages crowd, about 2,500 total, appeared at The Big Draw’s four different events held throughout Lower Manhattan, including water painting at the South Street Seaport, where Upper West Side resident Harvey Potter used water to paint the name of his son Alex, 2, adding a smiley face for effect.
