Parade riders, start your bikes!

The Second Annual Lower East Side Kids’ Art Bike Parade is ready to roll on Sat., Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Youngsters have been souping up their rides with handlebar streamers, cool spoke ornaments and much more at a series of bike-decoration workshops. Local artists Cindy Ruskin and Elena del Rivera have jazzed-up several cycles, as well. The Rude Mechanical Orchestra will blow tunes, while area restaurants — and a shaved-ice man specially imported from E. Houston St. — will provide eats and treats. The East Village Community Coalition has already given away 47 free bikes to pint-sized pedalers, according to Michael Rosen. The kiddie convoy will start in Tompkins Square Park, head over to Second Ave., then down to Sixth St., across to Avenue D and finish back in the park. Rosen said Congressmember Nydia Velazquez was supposed to be the event’s grand marshal, “but apparently she’s campaigning in Ohio.” Word has it Councilmember Rosie Mendez will be tapped to be “the leader of the pack.”
