Peggy O’Mara Conway, born in the Village 96 years ago to the family of a prominent local physician, died on Jan. 16 in Lawrence, Kan.
The widow of George J. Conway, a trial lawyer in New York City whom she married in the Village in 1934, she lived for 35 years in Manhasset, L.I. She moved to Connecticut, where she lived until moving in Jan. 2003 to Lawrence, Kan. Her husband died in 1985.
Peggy O’Mara was born on March 11, 1907, to Dr. Thomas J. O’Mara and Mary Kearney O’Mara on Hudson St. next to St. Luke’s-in-the-Fields Church. Her father was born in the Village and practiced medicine at 475 Hudson St. for 38 years. The family later moved to 32 Washington Sq. and then to 1 Fifth Ave.
She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s Academy, in Convent Station, N.J., and earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from the College of New Rochelle. She also graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School and studied for a master’s degree in English at Columbia University.
Her daughters, Mary-Elizabeth Debicki of Lawrence, Kan., and Jane-Lee McAllister of Victoria, British Columbia, as well as nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, survive.
Burial will be in Woodbury, Conn., on Feb 21 after a Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, Conn.
