Calling all boats

On the afternoon of the blackout on Aug. 14, hundreds of people flocked to the Chelsea Piers to board boats to get home to New Jersey. Some charter boats, like Spirit Cruises, and the Screamer, a high-speed powerboat ride, took people across for free. Others, including a privately owned cabin cruiser and some party boats, reportedly charged up to $50 per person for their services. (Villager photo by Anne Rinestone)
