Run over by bus Lourdes Fernandez, 68, was killed at 1:45 p.m. Wed., July 2, when she fell under the back wheel of a turning M22 bus on Madison St. near Jackson St., police said. The bus driver was unaware of the accident and drove on until police stopped him more than a mile away on Chambers St. near Greenwich St. He was not charged. The victim, who usually ventured out with the help of a homecare attendant, went grocery shopping alone on July 2 when she lost her balance while crossing Madison St., according to reports. She was declared dead at the scene.
Blade ’n’ beer Transit police arrested Steven Barker, 46, who was sleeping on a bench in the 14th St. station of the Sixth Ave. subway at 12:30 p.m. Wed., July 2, with a gravity knife and an open can of beer beside him. Barker, who is homeless, was charged with possession of a weapon and the misdemeanor charge of carrying an open alcohol beverage container.
In a G.P.S. mess Orville Kenlock, 29, of the Bronx, was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Sun., June 29, and charged with smashing the window of a car parked at Barrow and Washington Sts. in the West Village and stealing the car’s Global Positioning System device, police said. Kenlock pleaded guilty to criminal mischief, auto stripping and larceny on July 3, according to a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Bad News Bust redux Tatum O’Neal, 44, the actress who won an Oscar when she was 10 years old, pleaded guilty on July 2 to a reduced charge in connection with her drug possession arrest on June 1 on Clinton St. near East Broadway two blocks from her home. O’Neal was released on condition that she report to court on Sept. 4 to prove that she completed drug-rehabilitation treatment. She must also pay $95 in court fees.
July 4 assault Police arrested two men for beating a man who was watching the July 4 fireworks with his 14-year-old son at Water and Broad Sts. at 9:30 p.m. last Friday. Ahkeem Stafford, 23, of W. 124th St. in Manhattan, and Michael Simmons, 21, of the Bronx, were charged with gang assault for punching the victim, kicking him in the head after he fell to the pavement and inflicting facial wounds, a chipped tooth and bruises to his shoulder. The victim’s son was not harmed. Bails were set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond for each defendant pending July 10 court appearances, a district attorney spokesperson said.
‘I hate cops!’ Jacob Frost, 27, of York, Pa., was leaning against the door of a cab parked at Hudson and Reade Sts. at 2:40 p.m. Mon., June 30, preventing the driver from entering, police said. The suspect refused police officers’ orders to move, flailed his arms, shouted “I hate cops!” and punched one officer in the eye as they arrested him, police said. He pleaded guilty to assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct on July 3, according to the D.A.’s office.
Subway gay bash A man and a woman harassed and shouted anti-gay epithets at a gay man riding the No. 1 train with his partner on Saturday evening June 28 and fled from the train at Christopher St. according to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Quinn urged possible witnesses of the incident to call 1-800-577-TIPS.
Pre-Pride purse snatch A woman standing outside of her car parked at the curb on Christopher St. near Washington St. at about 4 a.m. Sun., June 29, noticed that her bag was gone from the seat where she had left it, police said, The street was crowded the morning before the Gay Pride celebration, and the victim said she had no idea how the bag was stolen.
One unhappy dancer A patron of One, the club at 1 Little W. 12th St., in the Gansevoort Market District, told police that when she returned from the dance floor at 2 a.m. Sun., June 29, she discovered that her bag was gone from the table where she left it. The victim said she asked people in the bar if they had seen the theft, but no one did. Unauthorized charges had been made on her credit card, police said.
Drunk-drivers dragnet Police arrested the New Jersey driver of a silver 2005 BMW on Ninth Ave. at W.13th St. at 11:40 p.m. Tues., July 1, for driving erratically. The suspect tested .103 on a field alcohol breath test. The legal limit is .08.
Police arrested a man driving a car straddling the double yellow line in front of 234 W. 14th St. at 1 a.m. Sat., July 5, who tested .98 on the alcohol breath test. He told police he had previously been arrested in Queens for D.W.I.
The driver of a 1996 white Land Rover was arrested on W. 14th St. and Ninth Ave. at 3:36 Fri., July 4, for driving erratically. He tested .097 on the breath test.
A New Jersey driver of a blue Chrysler minivan on Ninth Ave. at Gansevoort St. shortly before midnight Thurs., July 3, was charged with D.W.I. after testing .112 on an alcohol breath test.
