Ports 1961 lowers billboard

The two-story advertisement for Ports 1961 on the side of the building at 1-3 Ninth Ave. that first appeared this summer for the new store planned for the building at Gansevoort Square at Ninth Ave. and Gansevoort St. came down on Mon., Oct. 29.

“We reported this illegal billboard in the Gansevoort Market Historic District to the Department of Buildings and the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as well as contacting Ports 1961, the new store which apparently erected it,” said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

“We are hopeful it will stay down,” he added. But he acknowledged that he could not be sure that the sign came down on the orders of a city agency or because Ports 1961 decided it was up long enough.
