The Landmarks Preservation Commission will hold an information meeting for property owners and neighbors on a proposed expansion of the Soho Cast-Iron Historic District at 6 p.m. Wed., May 13, at the Puffin Room gallery, 435 Broome St.
The expansion would cover buildings on the west and east edges of the existing Soho Cast-Iron Historic District designated in 1973. On the existing district’s western edge, the expansion would extend along West Broadway’s west side from Houston St. to Broome St.’s southwest corner. On the existing district’s eastern edge, the expansion would run along Crosby St.’s east side from just south of Spring St. to Howard St.’s south side. The eastern-edge expansion also would include the buildings on Broome St.’s north side between Crosby and Lafayette Sts. and the buildings on Howard St.’s south side between Broadway and Crosby St.
The Victorian Society of America’s Metropolitan Chapter three years ago proposed the extension, which covers 72 buildings, nine with cast-iron facades typical of buildings in the original district. The proposed expansion is supported by Community Board 2, the Soho Alliance and Friends of Soho.
