Bernice Mariscal is the owner and operator of Juice Me juice bar at 1829 Hobart Ave. She opened in 2012 because, she said, there weren’t many healthy food options in the neighborhood. Three years ago, the 40-year-old, who lives in Country Club, just below Pelham Bay, started juicing as an alternative to the many medications she was prescribed to combat lupus, the autoimmune disease she suffers from.

Describe the Pelham Bay area to someone who might not be familiar with it.

It’s very family-oriented. There’s a diversified group of people here; it’s a very nice area and it’s evolving, but it’s a slow change.

What are some of your favorite places to go in the neighborhood?

Classic Hair and Nails on Crosby and Louis Seafood on East Tremont.

What is the most popular juice on Juice Me’s menu?

The Detox, for people trying to lose weight, and the Nutty Butter for those who want their protein.
