There will be safety improvements made to the Brooklyn Bridge exit to the F.D.R. Drive. The changes include: refreshing all the pavement markings and making them clearer and easier to read; replacing the current broken white line between the right and center lanes with a shorter-spaced dotted line; making it clearer much earlier that the merge is approaching; adding two repetitions of the words “exit only” to the right lane; and replacing the current sign that reads, “Bklyn-Battery Tunnel” with a new sign that reads, “Exit 1 / Battery Pk / Staten Is Ferry.”
Last month, State Sen. Daniel Squadron asked the state Department of Transportation to review the situation. He said that the city D.O.T. has agreed to make some changes to the exit ramp before the end of the year.
“You get late weavers that create fender benders or worse, and the delays, frustration, and gridlock cause problems,” said Squadron. “Anyone who has been on the roadway knows delays are pretty constant.”
The long-term, permanent solution, he said, is having not one but two lanes that run all the way around that exit, which requires some construction. “We’re committed to getting there,” Squadron said.
