Rec center may be renamed Dapolito

Responding to an item last week in The Villager’s Scoopy’s Notebook on a proposal by Sean Sweeney, director of the Soho Alliance, to rename Vesuvio Playground at Thompson and Spring Sts. for the late Tony Dapolito, Assemblymember Deborah Glick called to say that last month she raised the issue of naming a Department of Parks facility in Community Board 2 with Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. She said she was told that Parks favors renaming the Carmine Recreation Center on Seventh Ave. S. and Clarkson St. for the former “Mayor of Greenwich Village,” also known as “Mr. Parks” and “Mr. Playgrounds.” Glick said she favors the idea, since Vesuvio Playground, which was renamed for Dapolito’s bakery a few years ago, has a volcano theme incorporated into it, and because Parks’ proposal would allow for one outdoor and one indoor space named for Dapolito, who died last year.
