The body of well-known guitarist Robert Quine, 62, was found dead of a drug overdose in his fourth-floor Soho apartment at 96 Grand St. near Mercer St. at 9 p.m. Sat., June 5. Police said his death was a suicide and a note was found in the apartment. The drug was described only as “a controlled substance.”
Quine was part of the early 1970s New York punk scene, playing with Richard Hell and the Voidoids, with Lou Reed on Reed’s “Blue Mask” album and with Marianne Faithfull, Material, Tom Waits and Brian Eno.
He got involved with rock after taking a job in 1975 at Cinemabilia, a Village bookstore where Richard Hell also worked. Quine, born in Akron, Ohio, earned a law degree at Washington University in St. Louis. His wife, Alice, died last year. He was the nephew of the distinguished philosopher W. V. Quine, who died in 2000.
