In an event called “Eyes Wide Open,” Quakers placed more than 975 pairs of combat boots, representing one pair for each fallen U.S. soldier in Iraq, and more than 1,000 pairs of shoes, representing the thousands of Iraqis killed in the war, at Union Sq. last Wednesday. The display is intended to powerfully convey the stark realities of war.
