Francis A. Schiro, an East Village resident and track athlete who does his training at East River Park, notched another victory on Sat. March 25 at the U.S. Indoor Masters Track and Field event in Boston., Mass.
Schiro, 53, won the 400-meter (quarter-mile) indoor event for sprinters in the 50-to-55 age group with a time of 55.5 seconds. He beat a field of about 30 top Masters competitors who ran in five heats on the six-lane track in Boston.
The Sunday before the Boston event, Schiro was the 400-meter winner in the 50-to-55 age group in a local indoor event in the 168th St. Armory in Washington Heights.
A resident of E. Fifth St. and owner of a Ludlow St. gift-manufacturing studio, Schiro is a member of the Sprint Force America club’s 4-x-400 Masters relay team that won the Penn Relays title in 2004. He was also on the club’s four-member 200-meter relay team that set a world outdoor record last June.
