Downtown senior centers have reason to celebrate, thanks to the restoration of $25.2 million in Title XX funds included in the recently passed state budget.
State Senator Daniel Squadron appeared at the BRC Senior Center in Chinatown on Thursday, March 31 to deliver the good news.
“State funding has been saved for the months and years to come,” Squadron announced joyously to a host of seniors gathered in the center’s cafeteria.
At the same time, the Senator stressed, the victory hasn’t yet been fully achieved. It’s up to the city’s Department for the Aging to decide which senior centers will remain open.
“This was great,” Squadron said, “but we have to make sure the city will spend the money to keep these centers open. I have every hope that they will.”
