Senior vets take the cake

Laura Marceca, director of the Caring Community’s Washington Square Senior Center, cut the patriotic cake, above left, last Friday to celebrate the center’s annual Veterans Day ceremony. The celebration, which had been held in previous years at the Caring Community’s former center at First Presbyterian Church, honored the 39 veterans among the seniors who attended the Nov. 12 event at 20 Washington Square North. An American Legion Color Guard was on hand to recognize the veteran seniors, whose names were read individually at the event, which was organized by senior center members Victoria Stewart, Loretta Wilson and Frank Cho. Honored at the event were Army veterans: Donald Ahren, Luke Biggs, Earl Carter, Wally Elvers, Leonard Feinblatt, Vern Frary, Kevin Grizzard, Arnold Greissle, James Hamilton, Joe Henderson, Lawrence Liebers, Reno Lazzarotto, Richard Mandel, Lenny Manoff, Don Paskinoff, Mel Posin, Clyde Robertson, Anthony Ruggiero, Frank Salas (16 years), Nat Weinstein and Judy Foust (Army nurse); Air Force veterans: Mario Bernal, Bill Claytor (22 years), Ronald Harrigan, Jack Kamis, Nelson Levitt, Tom Lovcik and Roberto Roman; Navy veterans: Vern Michaels, James V. Riley, Joe Sibilla, Charles Townsend and William Wilson; Marine veteran Bill Barnes; Merchant Marine Irwin Isquith; and Coast Guard veteran Robert Ovryn.
