Shock to the (eco)system

The Lower East Side Ecology Center in partnership with the New York City Department of Sanitation and with assistance from Best Buy and Intel is offering free electronic waste-recycling on Sun., Oct. 16, at Union Square Park, north plaza, southeast corner of Broadway and 17th St. The event will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 100 people dropping off electronic items for recycling will receive a $5 Best Buy gift card.

Electronic items that will be accepted include any make or model of working and nonworking computers (desktop or laptop), monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, associated cables, TV’s and cell phones. There is a limit of five items per person.

Electronic components contain hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury and cadmium, and so pose an environmental risk when improperly discarded.
