The Fourth Annual Idiotarod, New York’s answer to Alaska’a grueling dog-sled race, was held Saturday, with this year’s surprise, last-minute route going from Greenpoint Park to Long Island City. The race consists of teams of five and a shopping cart, each sporting a theme. Looking on were crowds of spectators, several dozen police and a low-flying police helicopter overhead. At the first checkpoint, a bar at Franklin St. and Greenpoint Ave., racers had to spend 15 minutes drinking and lifting weights. After the finish, there were awards for Best in Show, Best Sabotage and the Drag-racing Award.
