The city’s Department of Transportation is on a real losing streak as far as botching street signs in Greenwich Village. Just days after a Bleecker St. sign at Morton St. was replaced with an incorrectly spelled “Bleeker” St. sign, another clunker was spotted at Greenwich St. and Perry St., where a “Greenwich Av” sign appeared last week. The new sign — brown since it’s in the Greenwich Village Historic District — replaced an existing historic district sign. Chris Gilbride, a D.O.T. spokesperson, said the agency had been notified of the glitch by 311. He said the sign would be changed overnight on Dec. 14; that was much the way the misspelled “Bleeker” sign appeared at Bleecker and Morton Sts., said Matt Umanov, owner of Matt Umanov Guitars. “Like a mushroom, it appeared overnight,” he said. Gilbride said a properly spelled Bleecker St. sign would be installed “straight away.” The “Greenwhich Av” sign was indeed replaced with a correct Greenwich St. sign — but by a regular, green sign, not a historic district one. “We’re now pushing for them to replace it with a historic district sign,” said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
