To the relief of any high-heel-wearing or baby-carriage-pushing New Yorker walking in the Village, the broken and hazardous cobblestones on Bond St. will soon be repaired. The NOHO NY Business Improvement District announced the repair of the cobblestones on Bond St. between Broadway and Lafayette St. as their second recent capital improvement in the Village area. The improvements, funded by contributions from the NOHO NY BID, the National Architectural Trust and Councilmember Alan Gerson, will be highlighted at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 18 at 10 a.m.
Harriet Fields, executive director of the BID, said it is important to keep Bond St. in good condition because of its historical significance. “It’s sort of our showpiece,” she said. “We are a historical district, so this is very important.” She said the cobblestones have been in such disrepair that they were becoming “a trip hazard.”
The BID also hopes the improvements will help out neighborhood businesses. They believe that many New Yorkers and visitors shop on Broadway and never venture over to Lafayette St.
