Despite a delay in its posting, a stop-work order was finally affixed to the door of 120 St. Mark’s Pl. on Tuesday. According to Ilyse Fink, a Department of Buildings spokesperson, the stop-work order was written the previous Tuesday. Last Friday, Fink said an inspector was heading over that day to post it. But he must not have made it.
Fink said the D.O.B. borough commissioner’s office executes the stop-work order, which is forwarded to D.O.B. construction, which posts it.
“There’s just been a couple of delays in the transmission with people being out of the office this week or the holiday,” Fink said last Friday.
On May 20, D.O.B. stopped illegal weekend work at the building. After the project failed a department audit, on May 23, D.O.B. wrote a “10-day letter” with intent to revoke the construction permit, which included the stop-work order.
The order was posted at 2 p.m. on May 30 — and at 5 p.m. was reported by witnesses to already have been pulled down. During the week between when the stop-work order was written and posted, work was reported to have been done in the building on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday morning.
The building is being renovated and expanded vertically and horizontally by Ben Shaoul of Magnum Management, who says he is putting a community facilities space — possibly a veterinarian’s office — in the ground floor to get extra bulk for the project. The building was formerly an artists’ squat called The Cave.
