On Sat., Nov. 10, students from professor and artist Zach Rockhill’s color theory class in The Cooper Union’s School of Art re-created Allan Kaprow’s “Fluids,” marking the original performance-art piece’s 40th anniversary. The 18 students lifted and assembled 300 ice blocks to create a large-scale installation, 30 feet long, 8 feet high and 10 feet wide.
Kaprow died in April 2006. His widow attended the event.
Rockhill, asked about the ironic synergy of the ice piece going up as the steel of the elite school’s new building across the street was starting to be hoisted up by a crane, replied, “Nothing is permanent. You will be able to see the ice melt in the next few days. If you walk through the next millennia, you could see buildings disappear as well.”
