More than 200 costumed revelers marked the sad occasion of the closing of Anthony Zito’s art gallery on Ludlow St., but they had a good time doing it. Zito, who paints on found objects, opened his gallery on the Lower East Side in 2001 in the aftermath of the Trade Center Attack, when new businesses were hesitant to come to the area. His rent recently skyrocketed, however, and he could no longer afford it. His was one of the last storefront galleries in the gentrifying neighborhood. Zito partygoers carried a coffin representing “the death of bohemia on the Lower East Side” into some of the neighborhood’s new expensive restaurants, above, and enjoyed performances by SS Infinity Group, below, and others.
