Things are looking Bleek again

Every few years, like clockwork, it seems to happen: A perfectly good Bleecker St. sign is taken down by the Department of Transportation and replaced with a misspelled sign renaming the street Bleeker. This time, the latest goof-up was noticed by Matt Umanov at the corner of Bleecker and Morton Sts. outside his Matt Umanov Guitars store. Holding a 1902 Kuntsen harp guitar, Umanov looked up at the incorrect sign on Thursday, above. He said a correctly spelled sign had been there for more than a year, and he wondered why it was ever taken down.

He said he called 311, but was told there was no one to connect him with to file a report; instead, he was advised to write a letter and was directed to what he discovered to be a nonworking Web site. Umanov said there is a Bleeker St. in Brooklyn, but his store, open since 1965, has always proudly been located on Bleecker St. — with a “C.”
