Councilmember Christine Quinn, back row center, met with youths from the Robert Fulton Houses and executives and personalities from the Food Network at the recent New York City Wine and Food Festival to promote New York City’s first Good Food Garden. Sporting such healthy fare as lettuce, cabbage and peas, the small, self-contained garden was unveiled in the Meatpacking District at 14th St. and Ninth Ave.; it was then to be moved to the Fulton Houses, in Chelsea, so residents there can partake freely of its nutritious produce, as well as gain hands-on gardening experience. Protected by a wire fence, the plot runs on a self-timed, battery-powered watering system. Share Our Strength, a nonprofit group targeting child hunger, is partnering with the Food Network in the gardens project. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from this year’s Wine and Food Festival directly benefited Share Our Strength and Food Bank for New York City, another hunger-relief organization.
