Uptown-style tower going up Downtown

Construction is starting on the new Robert A.M. Stern-designed building by The Related Companies at the location of the former Superior Inks building on West St. between Bethune and W. 12th Sts. Last week, construction workers were unloading steel, above, and crane parts at the site. At the same time, the image of the new building, in rendering below, first full building from right, has been made public by Related on a so-called teaser Web site. While neighbors are still fuming about Julian Schnabel’s new pinkish-red, or reddish-pink, high-rise tower on W. 11th St., the Related design seems even worse to some who feel it’s more appropriate for the Upper West Side or Upper East Side. Prices for the new condos reportedly will start at $1.2 million for lofts and go up to $7.3 million for four-bedroom apartments and $10 million for “townhouses.”
