Van Antwerp, 70, a Morton St. leader, dies

Zan E. Van Antwerp, a Village resident for 46 years and a former officer of the Morton St. Block Association, died Feb. 26 after a long illness at Village Nursing Home. She was 70.

She worked for several years as an executive legal secretary and before her illness was the long-time treasurer of the Morton St. Block Association. “It was her second nature to be a caregiver, and her extended family encompassed all those whose needs and problems were as much Zan’s concern as theirs,” said her friend and estate executor, Stan Ackert.

“In good weather, she and Charlie [Charles J. Grant, her companion of 23 years] could often be found in the garden at St. Luke-in-the-Fields,” Ackert recalled.

“Zan was one of our most loyal and productive members,” said Albert Bennett, block association president. “She attended every meeting and served as treasurer of the annual White Elephant Sale, from the very first meeting in late ‘93.  I also remember her name on documents from the early 70’s of the old Morton/Leroy/St. Luke’s Block Association,” Bennett said.

Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Col. William M. Van Antwerp and Marian Ericson Van Antwerp. Her brother, Capt. William M. Van Antwerp, Jr., died in the Vietnam War.

In addition to Grant, her sister-in-law, Helen C. Van Antwerp, and her nephews, William M. and Bradley P., survive. She is also survived by cousins from prominent families with a long New York history— Ericson, Van Antwerp and Van Rensselaer.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Fri., March 11 at St. Luke-in-the-Field, 487 Hudson St. (phone 212-924-0562 to confirm). Gifts in her memory can be given to Village Nursing Home, 607 Hudson St. New York 10014.
