NoNo Gourmet, an upscale deli currently located at the corner of Horatio and Washington Sts., signed a lease a little over three weeks ago to open a second location at the corner of Charles and Washington Sts. The deli will open in the storefront recently vacated by Deliziosa Pizza.
Charlie Yoon, NoNo Gourmet’s manager, was unsure of the lease negotiations but estimated the second location will open in a few months. Construction has already begun on the interior.
Deliziosa Pizza, a family-owned pizza place that had become a Far West Village neighborhood staple, closed in July after prolonged lease negotiations resulted in a court appearance.
“There were some lease negotiations and we went to court last May,” said the property owner Anastasios Hairtideris. “But ultimately, I think that the owner of Deliziosa’s owner just wanted to retire.”
In addition, DeMarco’s Pizzeria at W. Houston and MacDougal Sts., the scene of a fatal shooting earlier this year, appears to have recently closed, as well. The pizzeria was shut and its windows covered with paper this week; the windows of the next-door former DeMarco’s restaurant space were also covered with the same type of paper. After a worker at the restaurant was fatally shot in March by a crazed gunman, DeMarco’s said they would not be reopening the restaurant, and that it would likely become a bar. But the pizzeria owner indicated they hoped to keep the pizzeria operating.
On the night of March 14, David Garvin, 42, a regular customer at DeMarco’s restaurant, gunned down Alfredo Romero Morales, 33, a worker there, before fatally shooting Village auxiliary police officers Nicholas Pekearo, 28, and Eugene Marshalik, 19, nearby on Sullivan St., after which police cornered Garvin on Bleecker St. and slew him in a hail of bullets.
