‘We can easily get 100 pages of names’

Below is the text of the petition residents recently signed at a West Village coffee shop, asking for a crackdown on the Village’s entrenched prostitution problem, which the petition charges is worsening.

The recent letter in The Villager that described Greenwich Street as dangerous struck a nerve among the residents in the West Village.

Charles Street, Perry Street, Greenwich Street and many other West Village streets are taken over every night by prostitutes, pimps and drug dealers who endanger our much-loved neighborhood.

A local coffee shop put a petition on its front counter last weekend, asking that the elected officials and the 6th Precinct help us protect our streets. The attached petition has four pages signed by neighbors over the weekend. We can easily get 25 pages, or even 100 pages, signed by other residents who are equally frustrated.

We sent a similar petition to our political representatives and to the police last summer, but received no response. Since the situation is even worse this summer, we are turning to The Villager newspaper for help in solving this problem.
