May is Bike Month, an integral part of which is the Bicycle Film Festival at the Anthology Film Archives on E. Second St at Second Ave. On Saturday, E. Second St. was closed to traffic from First to Second Aves. from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a bike street party. There were various competitions, one of which involved standing motionless on a stationary bike with both feet on the pedals. A dozen cyclists were able to last the two-minute length, but when a judge called for one foot to be removed from one pedal, cyclists quickly lost their balance. The last one standing was Eric Ferguson of Croton-on-Hudson, who sat atop his “penny-farthing” bicycle, right. Another competition was a mini-demolition derby. Cyclists rode in a circle, attempting to bump others while not losing their own balance or letting a foot touch pavement.
