Winter is right around the corner. Though the temperature is cooling down, there are still plenty of arts-related activities to explore throughout New York City.
Here are a few art exhibits and attractions that you can check out this winter.
Suzanne Scott — “Boy, That Was Fast,” The Catskills
368 Broadway, Suite #410, Tribeca. Dec. 3 through 30
Opening on Dec. 1, Suzanne Scott is bringing her thumbprint portraits to a solo show at The Catskills in Tribeca. The show is titled after the last words of a dear friend and mentor to Scott who passed away earlier this year. The exhibition will feature all new work focusing on mortality and gratitude for our daily life, while also discussing the importance of human bonds.
Tyrell Hampton — “Go Home,” SN37
204 Front Street, Seaport. Through Jan. 9, 2022
In his first ever solo show, Tyrell Hampton is showcasing his photography at SN37, a not-for-profit gallery the debuted at the Seaport this fall. The exhibition will feature a selection of Hampton’s black and white photos of partygoers, which are a nod to Hampton’s initiation into city life as a teenager first experiencing New York City. The proceeds from this show will be donated to the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation.
Sanctuary: The 2021 Socrates Annual — Socrates Sculpture Park
32-01 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City. Through March 6, 2022
Socrates Sculpture Park has been a haven for artists since 1986. This winter, 11 projects have been selected that best represent a range of diverse communities, traditions and more through sculpture. In the proposals, artists were asked: how can art function as a sanctuary, a place of refuge, rest and meditation – without resorting to escapism? The selected sculptures are their answers.
“Lightscape,” Brooklyn Botanic Garden
990 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn. Through Jan. 9, 2022.
With the nights getting longer, nothing brightens up the dark sky like Lightscape. Hosted by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, this event is one of the largest light shows in New York City. Bundle up and take a stroll through the outdoor holiday illuminated trail with over a million lights that run almost the full length of the garden.
Holiday Lights at the Bronx Zoo
2300 Southern Blvd, Bronx. Through Jan. 9, 2022.
See the Bronx Zoo lit up with fantastic art pieces this winter! This annual event boasts custom-designed animal lanterns, creating an immersive experience that you won’t forget. Don’t forget to take some photos near your favorite animal!
Summit One Vanderbilt
45 E 42nd Street. All winter
SUMMIT, which is opened at One Vanderbilt this fall, is a huge skyscraper that takes visitors to the highest vantage point in Midtown with views of the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building and north to Central Park, and glass floor ledges that overhang over 1,000 feet above Madison Avenue. What better way to get a look at the city in all of its winter glory? The attraction has also expanded its holiday hours to allow more opportunities to visit.
Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park
West 42nd Street and 6th Avenue. Through March 6, 2022.
Enjoy a day of winter-themed fun without ever leaving the city at the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park. The village has ice skating, iceless curling and cozy igloos to enjoy, plus a variety of shops and local vendors to browse through just in time for the holiday season. Be sure to warm up with a drink at the Lodge by Prime Video.
Union Square Holiday Market
Union Square and 14th Street. Through Dec. 24
After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Union Square Holiday Market is back and better than ever. Vendors and shops line Union Square with ample opportunities for holiday shopping and winter fun.
Rockefeller Center
Between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas from 48th -51st Streets.
The iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is a staple of New York City in December. Come by to see the tree and explore the center this winter, and try your hand at skating in the rink underneath the huge tree. This is a great place to make holiday memories this winter.
