Brandon Nimmo revitalized his season stat line in a single day, going 4-for-6 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and tying a franchise record with nine RBI, as the New York Mets rolled over the Washington Nationals 19-5 on Monday evening to salvage a four-game series split.
Entering Monday’s contest with a paltry .192 batting average and .575 OPS, Nimmo did all of his damage in a three-inning span, which tied Carlos Delgado’s franchise mark for most RBI in a single game set on June 27, 2008. He became the first player in Major League Baseball since Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani on Sept. 19, 2024 to drive in nine or more runs in a single game, and just the third player in MLB history to drive in nine-plus RBI in a three-inning span (Sammy Sosa in 2002, Ivan Rodriguez in 1999).
“It’s been a little bit frustrating,” Nimmo said. “You never know, days like today might happen — tying a franchise record in RBI, that obviously doesn’t happen every day. But even just getting balls in the air, hitting balls hard, it doesn’t always work out like that. So, really just enjoyed today. These days don’t come around that often, and you just sit back and enjoy it.”
Nimmo’s barrage began in the sixth inning in a 3-0 game, when he hit his fifth home run of the season — a three-run shot on a high fastball that was taken 410 feet out to center field.
After Pete Alonso made it 7-0 one inning later in the top of the seventh with an RBI single, Nimmo cleared the loaded bases with a grand slam, again jumping on a high fastball and taking it 406 feet out to right-center field.
In the top of the eighth, he doubled to score two more.
“We started seeing the Nimmo that we all know,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Pretty good player, and it was good to see him go out there and have taht type of performance.”
With the lopsided result, the Mets became the first team in Major League Baseball this season to reach the 20-win mark, improving to 20-9.
