Leap Day: Exploring the extra day in 2024

Every four years, we’re granted an extra day in the calendar. Leap Day—which falls on Feb. 29—sparks global curiosity and fascination. But, what really is Leap Day, and how can New Yorkers make the best of the day this year? Here are some answers to the mysteries of Leap Day, discover interesting facts and find out how to spend it in NYC.

What is Leap Day?

It typically takes the Earth 365.24 days to orbit the sun, just a few hours longer than the typical 365-day year. To account for seasonal drift, an extra day is added to the calendar every four years. Without this, summer would occur in December in just 700 years, according to the National Air and Space Museum

Interesting Facts about Leap Day

  1. Did you know that Queens-native rapper Ja Rule was born in Queens on Feb. 29, 1976? The “Always on Time” and “Mesmerize” singer will turn 12-years-old this year, according to Leap Day standards.
  2. Feb. 29 is significant for romantics. Many cultures believe that Leap Day is the one day women could propose to men—made famous in the 2010 film. In 1940, New York State made this tradition official by making Feb. 29 a legal day for women to propose to men.
  3. Leap Day has its own signature cocktail. This unique drink was created in 1928 by Harry Craddock at the Savoy Hotel in London. This blend of gin, Grand Marnier, lemon juice and vermouth will surely add decadence to your celebrations.
