Eat and Drink NYC ice cream gets upgraded with DIY parlor CoolMess By Georgia Kral Updated July 15, 2016 3:07 PM Print Share Share Tweet Share Email It's summer and it's hot and the only antidote is cool, sweet, delicious ice cream. And on the Upper East Side, instead of just eating it, you can make your own. Love chocolate chunks and peanut butter cups? Head to CoolMess and turn your vision into reality. CoolMess is a great place for a kids' party, but it's an equally good spot for a ladies' date. Here's a perk: If you're of drinking age, you can order alcoholic beverages (or any, really!) from Burger Heaven downstairs, which is owned and run by the same family as CoolMess. If you were a hot mess, now you're cool Photo Credit: Georgia Kral CoolMess is on the second floor, above Burger Heaven, on 62nd Street and Lexington Avenue. To get there, you go up a staircase decked out with sprinkle wallpaper and neon. The parlor Photo Credit: Georgia Kral Once inside, you're given the option of making your own ice cream or ordering a sundae or milkshake. While those options are all well and good, we're here to make our own. The ice cream makers Photo Credit: Georgia Kral This is where the magic happens. 'Steps to the mess' Photo Credit: Georgia Kral You pick your base first. The choices are either vanilla or chocolate, and both are from Brooklyn's Blue Marble Ice Cream. Next, you pick your toppings. Or, if you want to go with what the experts suggest, there are a few combinations listed. We'll take both chocolate and vanilla, please Photo Credit: Georgia Kral Advice: If you're headed to CoolMess, go with a few friends and get both base flavors. Each order makes enough ice cream for about three servings and costs $30. Toppings, toppings, toppings Photo Credit: Georgia Kral Three toppings are included in the $30 flat rate. We went for rainbow sprinkles, Heath Bar crunch, brownie bites and mini peanut butter cups. More toppings are available Photo Credit: Georgia Kral You can mix Jelly Bellys into your ice cream, too. Step 1: Pour in the base Photo Credit: Georgia Kral After turning the churning machine on, you pour in your base of choice. It churns for eight minutes Photo Credit: Georgia Kral After adding the base, the machine whirs and cools, turning the liquid into ice cream with a consistency not unlike soft serve. Step 2: Add your mix-ins Photo Credit: Georgia Kral What a beautiful sight. You add your toppings while the base is aerating and reaching the desired consistency. Step 3: Pull the ice cream from the mixing blade Photo Credit: Georgia Kral While yes, this is a DIY ice cream parlor, there are staffers who help with some steps, like this one. Get excited... Step 4: Scoop it into bowls Photo Credit: Georgia Kral You've made your own ice cream, now it's time for the finishing touches. Step 5: Whipped cream and sprinkles, duh Photo Credit: Georgia Kral You can add whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate sauce or any other topping of your choice to the ice cream bowl of your dreams.
