Model Gigi Hadid has apologized for a comic impersonation of Melania Trump that Hadid performed at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
“I was honored to host the AMAs last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business,” Hadid, 21, said in a handwritten letter posted on Twitter on Monday night. “I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent.”
In a parody portrayal of Yugoslavia-born Trump, 46, Hadid used a comic Eastern European accent and poked fun at the future first lady’s Republican National Convention speech, in which Trump, a former model, used unattributed lines from a speech by Michelle Obama. “I love my husband President Barack Obama and our children, Sasha and Malia,” Hadid jokingly exaggerated.
“I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run,” Hadid added in the letter. “I apologize to anyone that I offended & have only the best wishes for our country.”
