Former hip-hop mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, in jail facing murder and attempted murder charges, has sued singer Chris Brown and a Los Angeles nightclub over a 2014 shooting in which he was injured and required surgery.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Brown, who hosted the party, and the nightclub 1 OAK LA of having inadequate security that allowed at least one armed person to enter. The suit argues that special security precautions should have been taken because of Brown’s “well-documented track record of hosting events and/or parties in which violence frequently erupted.” Brown, 27, was not implicated in that Aug. 24, 2014, shooting. No arrests have been made.
Knight’s attorneys also say the shooting made Knight, 51, fearful months later after an argument with two men in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, reports The Associated Press. Believing he was being attacked in his pickup truck, Knight fled and accidentally ran the men down, killing one.
Death Row Records founder Knight has a history of arrests and convictions stretching to at least 1992, when he assaulted two aspiring rappers in a Hollywood recording studio. he eventually pleaded no contest and received a suspended nine-year prison term and five years probation. That probation was revoked in 1996 after a judge found Knight an “active participant” in the beating of a reputed gang member at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. Knight was imprisoned for five years, then did stints again in 2002 and 2003.
