One of the very best things we ate at the 2014 Wine & Food Festival was the burger from Perla at the Blue Moon Burger Bash — and Perla wasn’t even listed as a participant! (Montmartre, another Gabriel Stuhlman restaurant, was.) The burger was perfection: tons of meaty flavor, pickled escarole, Caciocavallo cheese. And it came with a side of tater tots and crispy chickpeas. The best thing at any tasting event ever?
Other highlights: the dry-aged burger from Smith & Wollensky (with a side of fried creamed spinach!!), the Red Cat burger from Rouge Tomate.

Meatopia X: The Carnivore’s Ball meat tasting event on Sunday afternoon featured bites from top restaurants of all culinary backgrounds, from Oceana to The Cannibal to Jeepney. Whiskey cocktails were also enjoyed on the roof of Pier 92, with its picturesque views, but the highlight of the event was when this whole steer was extracted from a concrete container where it had been cooking, via forklift. Pat LaFrieda, the famous meat purveyor, was responsible for this 1,000 pound hunk of meaty goodness.
Meatopia, founded by the food writer Josh Ozersky, dictates that every part of every animal be cooked over open fires. All meat is cruelty-, hormone- and antibiotic-free.
