Pierce Brookins, an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 777 Manhattan, is working on an Eagle Scout project that will provide new opportunities to the South Bronx community.

He is partnering with Mercy Center, a community center in the South Bronx that aims to improve job opportunities for individuals regardless of income. Brookins’ project will bring a 3D printer, a vinyl cutter, new computers, decorations and more to an existing communal space at the center.

His hope is that his project will help Mercy Center serve its mission of providing job opportunities by giving members the resources they need to prototype their ideas and make them a reality.

In addition to the equipment, Brookins also plans to train the community center members and staff in how to use all of the new equipment.

Brookins’ inspiration for this project came a few years ago when he was gifted a 3D printer. His experience with the 3D printer and other similar technology made him realize how many possibilities equipment like it opens up. He saw his ideas transform from thoughts into tangible creations and wanted others to have the same opportunity.

I thought of this project after seeing the impact technology can have on others and decided to help and play a small role in fixing the large tech barriers within the city,” Brookins said.

To turn his project into a reality, Brookins started a GoFundMe on Dec. 4, 2022, with a goal of raising $3,800. At the time of publication, the GoFundMe has met that goal, raising $3,930. According to the GoFundMe page, any extra money raised will be donated directly to Mercy Center.

With the new equipment and training, Brookins hopes individuals will feel empowered to turn their dreams into reality.

“My hope for this project is for it to inspire people to help bridge the tech gap within the city,” Brookins said. “I hope this project will impact future generations to build the ideas of tomorrow.”
